Pony Album Project

Pony, by Orville Peck is a country album that captures the queer experience in unexpected genre. The masked singer’s debut album captures feelings of heartbreak and loneliness. I worked to rebrand the album and developed a new visual system that extended into its promotional materials.

Concept.

I enjoy the original artwork for Pony by Orville Peck, but I also feel as though there are some ways that it could be improved. I’ve listened to the album many times before, but I listened through once more and took detailed notes on themes and motifs present throughout the album. Peck identifies as a gay man and makes sure to captures his own experiences in the queer community as well as the stories of others in each song.

Heartbreak, loneliness, and solitude are repeated themes throughout the album. Lending from the country genre, I wanted to capture the idea of Peck as a lone ranger. I looked at many of the albums and artists that have musically inspired him, and classic/traditional country album covers often capture the artist isolated in some way. For the final product, I continued this trend while finding new ways to capture his iconic masked persona.

Development.

After listening to the whole album, I began sketching different versions of his mask to see how I could best capture his likeness. Storytelling is a huge part of Peck’s lyrics, so I use the fringe of his mask to create a curtain that sets a scene. It also pays homage to the original cover which depicts him standing in front of a red curtain-like fabric. Green carnations, a symbol historically linked to queer identification, are woven into the fringe of the mask.

After sketching, I carved the preliminary designs into a 4x4in. block of wood. Once I carved each piece, I was able to create compositions by using scans of the wood, prints from the woodblocks, and textures from materials. Using physical wood materials was inspired by the use of wood type in many country album covers and the printing processes used for prints associated with American western culture. After solidifying each composition, I carved the design onto its final 12x12in. woodblock.

Deliverables.

The record sleeve shown below features the design carved into the woodblocks, with a cutout to reveal the inner sleeve holding the record. The inner sleeve slides out to reveal a scene of Peck riding a horse in solitude. As well as creating the record sleeve, I created a Spotify banner, a concert poster, and a bi-fold lyric book to accompany the release of the album.
